1st January:
Happy New Year 2012.
Britain celebrates New Year on 1st January. This is the first day of the Gregorian calendar, which is also called as Western calendar and Christian calendar. This calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII. It is a reform of the Julian calendar which was made by Julius Caesar on 46 BC. The British celebrates this day as a New Year from 1752. It is celebrated with lot of energy, enthusiasm and delight, in keeping with the times yet preserving the old traditions. The celebration starts from the eve, i.e. from 31st December’s night of the old year and lasts till the dawn of the 1st January of the New Year. The church bell at the mid night twelve welcomes the New Year with fireworks display throughout Britain. Another tradition is England is that of opening the back door of the houses as soon as the church bell rings at midnight, it is to bid farewell to the old year. A preferably young, handsome, dark haired man is asked to enter through the main door of the house with salt, coal and bread, which is believed to bring good luck in the New Year.
